The 1010 is best suited for reading codes that are dot peened, etched or engraved into metals or other similar materials. The reader's performance is optimized when used between 1.5 and 4.8 inches. It can read down to exceptionally small marks - those with an X dimension as small as 10 mils and a minimum bar code depth of 8 mils.

The Sensis bumpy bar code reader reads and decodes three-dimensional bar codes that are directly engraved or etched into the product. It works by illuminating the bar code target with a laser and capturing the reflected image in a two-dimensional CCD. Then the reflected image is digitalized and processed by an onboard Digital Signal Processor (DSP) chip.
